“I hired several WordPress ‘speed experts’ before and all failed to achieve decent results. Steve is an expert in his field. His advice helped me understand what was slowing down my website and fix it permanently. My site used to take 5 to 7 seconds to load – and after Steve worked his magic – it now loads in less than 1 second. Thank you!” supboardguide.com Hamburg, Germany
Reader’s Smug COMPLAINT
I’m cautious about using old plugins for 2 reasons:
- non-maintained plugins have a higher risk for security vulnerabilities.
- possible compatibility issues further down the line if not now.
PagePipe’s Flippant Answer
Who taught you these 2 plugin myths? The boogie man?
So do paid popular plugins have less security risks? Nah.
Popular plugins flaws are discovered often.
Do paid plugins ever have compatibility issues? Frequently.
When is a plugin too old to trust?
When it stops working – or it gets taken-down.
Dear Smugness: Seriously, if security and compatibility are issues, don’t use WordPress CMS. Examine it’s history of known-issues. There’s no proof of zero-risk. The WordPress world changes all the time.
Lonely, rarely-found plugins still work. And often for over a decade
without complaints. That isn’t brokenness. Does that mean it won’t work
anymore with new versions of WordPress?
It means you do plugin testing. Always. Even for “fresh” plugins.
Some appear stale – but they work and are as safe as any other plugin.
Either paid or free.
So the question is “Outdated? By what definition?” Some think a warning like: “This plugin hasn’t been tested with the latest 3 major releases of WordPress.”
WordPress’ motive is covering their legal risk against liability and lawsuits. If a plugin didn’t work anymore or presented security hazards, it’s removed fast. They call those “takedowns.”
Plugins stay as long as there isn’t any *noise* about them. Retired or dead author’s plugins stay in the WordPress free directory. 55,000 plugins! Beautiful resource.
No plugin is guaranteed safe. Not even paid (premium) plugins. Don’t let silly warnings discourage you. They aren’t for your protection. They’re protecting corporate WordPress.
So are there “stale” plugins in this collection? Yes. Two aren’t very fresh. One of those is over 2 years old. Are there newer alternatives? Yes. But they don’t load fast.
It’s an endless unachievable job testing plugins for compatibility or vulnerability. If you think we’re careless or sloppy in our plugin recommendations, email us. Please give us a workable solution – not a mere complaint.
For example, WordPress owns WooCommerce plugin. It has millions of user installations.
“WooCommerce 4.6.2 dropped last week, with a fix for a vulnerability that allowed spam bots to create accounts at checkout – even when the “Allow customers to create an account during checkout” setting was disabled.”
How fresh was WooCommerce plugin? Did it have security risks? Yep. Big time. WordPress is the billion-dollar mothership. Even they get it wrong. Have mercy!
